Sketchy Stories: Illustration Blog By Kerby Rosanes

I’ve never been a huge fan of American comics characters when I was a kid since I grew up watching Anime shows and books. But not until Hollywood started to bring characters like Green Lantern, Ironman, Spider-man, X-Men and Captain America into life via theaters, at an instant I became a fan.

Yesterday, me and my friends Wella, Pia and Erson just watched The Avengers - another “superhero” movie which most says are only for kids. Well, were kids at heart, really. It is the popular Marvel masterpiece which was loved in comic books and TV shows. I admit I’m not a fan of the group and not even well oriented about the individual stories of some characters.

Since The Avengers premiere last April 25 here in the Philippines, everyone was talking about it. This gave me and my friends the extra excitement to watch it on the big screen. We even planned to wear The Avengers inspired t-shirts during the movie and exerted some extra effort to find a unique one in stores. Wella and Pia is lucky to buy nice shirts designed with The Hulk and Ironman theme. I was not satisfied with the Captain America inspired shirts in most stores so I decided to create it myself. I bought a plain white shirt and a black fabric pen. And with a little dose of doodling creativity, here’s my doodle - Capt. America inspired shirt:

I did this for two long nights but it’s fun and satisfying.

The Captain America sheild/logo was the highlight of the shirt design.

My verdict about the movie? Well, all was unexpected. I know that the casting was in full force with some great names like Chris Evans (Captain America), Robert Downey Jr. (Ironman) and Scarlet Johansson (Black Widow) but I never expected that the movie would be that GREAT! Yes, we know the individual capabilities of the characters but their great combination were just unexpected. The movie highlights were the humor between the scenes credited to Ironman and The Hulk, stunning visual effects, intense action scenes and totally interesting plot.

The Avengers - Captain America

The Avengers is still showing in theaters nationwide. It stars Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Rufallo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlet Johansson and Tom Hiddleston. Directed by Josh Wedon.

Me and two of my friends had this boring afternoon during the day we left for Bicol. To kill time, we went to a mall near the bus station and did some window shopping. Out of nowhere, we came to this store called “Papemelroti” - a store popular for paper products most likely for crafts and scrapbooking.

Right there I’ve found a very interesting notebook with pages in old brown color and completely blank. Since I’ve been looking for a new sketchpad for a few days, mostly in local bookstores, I decided to purchase a piece of it.

With some dose of creative concept and some strokes of my pens, I’ve created a brand new sketchbook for my new love, doodling. A doodle sketchbook is just a perfect catch.

The cover is very interesting as I did some tweaks in the Google site logo and transformed it into “Doodle Search” sketchbook, replacing the letter G’s to D’s.

I’m currently starting to fill up the pages with lots of doodles and I’m pretty excited to share them all in here soon. :)

The last time I posted about my first stint in creating artworks using watercolors was during the time I returned to my hometown to spend the Holy Week. So now I’ll be sharing one of the few artworks I’ve created so far. It is called “MOONSTRUCK” drawn with ink and watercolor on paper.

“MOONSTRUCK” (ink and watercolor on paper)

What’s nice about watercolor painting is that a one single hue can be experimented into a variety of color schemes. It’s my first time to use this medium so I’m quite surprised how it gave a beautiful effect on my ink drawings. Good thing the sketchbook I’ve used have pages with enough durability to resist water.

More to go in watercolor painting and I’m getting excited for new and interesting subjects. Don’t worry,I’ll keep you guys posted. :)

April 1 marks the date of my greatest achievement so far in my doodling career!

My doodle entry called “THE PLAYTIME HOUSE” was chosen as one of the 50 artworks to be printed by DA (Doodlers Anonymous) Isn’t that great? Well, there were about 365 entries submitted from doodlers all over the world. Now that’s really GREAT!

Back in my February 16 post, I’ve shared about my entry to the Open Call Submission of the DA Coloring Book Volume II. March 31 was the final announcement of the selected winners but it was done by emailing the winners.

Luckily, I received the “golden” email last April 1. Here’s an excerpt of the message:

Hello Doodler,

Thank you for participating in our second coloring book’s open call.
We have some great news! Your submission has been accepted as a final
entry, and it’s very probable we’ll be printing it (baring any last
minute layout changes).

Congratulations!

We look forward to getting this into the hands of art fans everywhere.
You can do the happy dance now, we’ll join you :)

All the best,
Rony/OKAT, Editor @ DA

Here’s a clip of all the submitted entries for the contest as posted on the DA blog last March 13. They pilled up roughly 365 entries in this 58 secs video so don’t dare to wink. Mine was somewhere in the 28th second.

I was really praying to be selected. Because I know how much time and effort I’ve exerted just to submit an entry. Well, thank you God for answering my prayers!

The next thing to look forward to is the final date of release of the coloring book. I just can’t wait to grab my free copy of it. :)
